Mergui Archipelago consists of more than 800 islands stretching 225km N-S along the west coast of southern Myanmar, off the Malay Peninsula, lying in the Andaman Sea. The islands are limestone and granite, covered in tropical growth, with offshore coral reefs. Their attractions include many interesting rock formations, and their diversity of flora and fauna. The local people include the Moken (Sea gypsies) who follow traditional ways of ship building and fishing. The region opened to tourists in 1997, and it draws diving enthusiasts (best during December to April), particularly from Thailand.

Myeik is a coastal island city of over 200,00 adjacent to the archipelago. It is famous for its products such as pearl, rubber, coconuts, edible bird's nest, dried fish, dried prawn and Ngapi (shrimp paste). From the 16th century is was an important trading port. Its history includes rule by Siam, Britain, French, Japan (WWII) and Burma (now Myanmar). Today it includes many ethnic groups including Bamars, Overseas Chinese, Karen, Indians, Mon, and Moken. The city’s attractions include two main pagodas.

The tsunami heights from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami were not more than 3 m along the Myanmar coast. Interestingly, the James Bond film Thunderball has a ransom of diamonds to be delivered to the archipelago. And for those who know W.E. John’s “Biggles” air adventures, three books are located here.
