Nosy Hao (‘Hao Island’: Malagasy; also known as ‘Murder Island’) is an island lying off the SW coast of Madagascar. It is located 5.4 km due west of the village of Andavadoaka on the Madagascan mainland. The island is just 2.1 km N-S, and a maximum of 400 m E-W. However, the reef surrounding all sides measures 5.6 km by 1.8 km, which is much larger than the island. From the reef the water depth increases deeply to the west beneath the Mozambique Channel with its strong currents.

The atoll has the centrally located Korail Resort of half a dozen buildings, and fisher’s huts by the shorelines. The reefs offer excellent snorkellino due to the wide biodiversity of corals and fish. The local Vezo (semi-nomadic coastal people) fish from their traditional dugout canoes with outriggers and square sails (pirogues), amidst the clear aquamarine waters. Visitors to this island recommend stargazing on a clear night.

Many scientific studies have and are being conducted on Madagascar’s reefs, and regarding Nosy Hao it is written: “The patch reefs found near the southern edge of the Nosy Hao reef flat are by far the healthiest coral reefs in the region with about 45% coral cover, with some exceptional sites approaching 70% coral cover.”
