The first French settlement of Madagascar, Fort Dauphin (since 1975 Tôlanaro or Taolagnaro) is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides - is located on one of the island’s most beautiful stretches of coast. The newly built Port d’Ehoala provides easy access to the colonial town that is the gateway to a whole host of great excursions and activities. Locally known as the ‘place of dreams’, its lush setting with clear waters and green mountains will hold particular appeal for nature-lovers. A number of excellent ecotourism projects make it relatively easy to take in the lush, semi-tropical landscapes, stands of spiny forest, and wild beaches.

Colonialised by Portuguese and French, Madagascar became independent in 1960. This corner of the world’s fourth-largest island has developed into the centre of a prosperous tourist industry, and recently ilmenite mining has contributed to improved infrastructures. To get a good view of the town and its surroundings, take a hike up the 529m Pic St. Louis. In town relax by strolling through the markets, lazing on the fine sandy beaches, and enjoying the marvellous cuisine. Most visit the Saiadi Botanic Garden that is home to native flora and fauna including orchids, as well as crocodiles, birds and butterflies.

Libanona beach is certainly the most beautiful, secure and popular of the city. The city still preserves some vestiges of colonial architecture. One beautiful example is the big white house of the Kaleta family, near the hotel Dauphin. Most visitors head for the hinterland’s tropical paradise. Just 40 km away is the renowned Berenty Reserve, the ideal place to spot different types of lemurs. The Andohahela National Park, a lush paradise of baobab, pachymodiums and palm trees, is another popular destination.
