Diego Suarez - aka Antsiranana - is a city with a natural harbour at the northern tip of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. It is the capital of the Diana region. Diego Suarez was a strategic port used by many western countries over the centuries and had a French military base operating until the socialist revolution of 1973. French influence is still strong today and commercially is evidenced by one of the most developed shipyards in the Indian Ocean. The economy is based upon fishing and agriculture with two important sugar refineries in Nosy Be and Ambilobe.

Diego Suarez is named after the Portuguese explorer Diego Diaz who came to Madagascar in 1500, and the sailor Fernando Suarez who arrived at the bay in 1506. Unfortunately, Diego Diaz was rather cruel to the locals and sold them into slavery. In 1885 the French Navy built a military base on the location, given the strategic importance of a deep-water harbour. During World War II Diego Suarez was under control of the French Vichy. In 1942 Britain and The Allies occupied Diego Suarez to prevent Japanese warships and submarines from entering the harbour.

Currently, Diego Suarez is the main gateway town to base yourself when exploring the region. There is plenty of excellent hiking to do in the two national parks of Montagne d’Ambre and Ankarana, and a growing niche of more adventurous sports to try, such as quad biking and kitesurfing. Some travellers decide to make day trips from Diego. The city itself has a modern and well-kept appearance, and is famous for its fishing products and handicrafts made of zebu horn and sea turtle shell. These are on show at the great market where artisans, fishermen and farmers sell their products.
