Agadir is a city in southern Morocco, surrounded by the Sahara Desert, natural parks and beaches. It is not typical of traditional Morocco as it has large buildings, wide roads, European-style cafés and modern hotels, because it was rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1960. The delightful beaches are extremely popular, while many visitors enjoy the local cuisine at restaurants that offer authentic Morrocan and French Moroccan fusion dishes. Also very popular is the well known large market that offers local fresh food and some great souvenirs.

It is most worthwhile to visit both the Zoo called “Vallee des Oiseaux” where you can find delightful birds and animals, and the Museum Municipal du Patrimoine Amazigh, which exhibits a collection of berber objects from the 18th and 19th centuries, old musical instruments, traditional clothing and ancient manuscripts. The opportunity to ride a Berber horse along the beach through the surf at low tide, or go off the beaten track to absorb some mountain scenery, also proves to be very popular.

Be sure to drive to the remains of the fortress on a nearby hill, and even visit Taghazout, a small fishing town 19 km north of the city to enjoy surfing at the beaches backed by mountains, which are considered the most beautiful ones in Morocco. Others ride buggies, or possibly ride a camel over the sand dunes or simply relax at one of the many spas on offer. Across the river is the ancient town of Taroudant where you can meander within old city walls and shop for handicrafts fashioned by centuries-old methods.
