We dealt with Gayle and she was excellent. She was very professional and always got back to us promptly. Our cabin was upgraded, if Clean Cruising had something to do with this, thank you very much!"

Trincomalee (‘Trinco’) is a port town on the east coast of Sri Lanka, having a population of about 100,000. The town is built on a peninsula, on one side of which is an inner deep-water harbour for anchorage (the fifth largest natural harbour in the world), and on the other side are white beaches bordered by the Indian Ocean. The excellent harbour is accessible to all types of vessels, whereas the picturesque beaches are used for surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. The town is situated in a less well developed and sparsely populated area.

Here is a centre of Tamil speaking culture. In previous ages it attracted Marco Polo, Ptolemy and sea traders from China, and was occupied variously by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British. In recent times it has been an import British air and naval base, and is currently used as such by Sri Lankan armed forces. The town still has remnants of the old Portuguese Fort Fredrick built in 1623. Popular tourist destinations include its beaches at Uppuveli, Salli and Nilaveli, used for temple visits, surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching, and the Kanniya Hot Springs.

Nearby is the famous Hindu Koneswaram temple and bell tower, and various Buddhist historical sites. Visit the seven hot springs just out of town. Fortunately, the town was not affected by the Asian Tsunami of 2004, though it was used a relief centre. Walking around town will introduce you to the very friendly locals, who in turn will direct you to many worthwhile viewing sites. Spend a day exploring the ins and outs of the myriad waterfronts and the fort and its famous temple.
