Sokcho is a city of 90,000 population, a port on the Sea of Japan, just 50km south of the border with North Korea. Many of its people have relatives in North Korea, and the city was in North Korea until the end of the Korean War in 1953. The city attracts many national and international tourists as it is a well-known gateway to nearby Seoraksan National Park. Other attractions are its beaches, natural hot springs, and fine fishery products. Lake Cheongcho lies adjacent to and south of the harbour, surrounded on three sides by the city, while the entire coastline to the east is beach after beach. Overlooking Lake Cheongcho is Expo Tower.

A short walk north of the Harbour takes you to the Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory that offers a good view out to sea and across the city to the mountains. Sokcho Jungang Market nearby the harbour is an area dedicated to restaurants where visitors can find mainly Korean style beef pork and chicken restaurants, and a great variety of seafoods. Also nearby is Abai Village with seafood – squid, raw and BBQ fish. To the north of the city is Yeongrang lake, renowned for its beauty and reflections. About 4km south is Daepohang Port, a popular tourist spot for devotees of fresh raw fish products: eel, flatfish, flounder, yellowtail, and plethora of other high-end seafood.

Just 15km inland is Seoraksan, the highest mountain in the Taebaek mountain range at 1708m. The surrounding jagged peaks in the national park, often mist covered, are of striking beauty, especially in autumn with reds and yellows. The entrance is only a fifteen-minute drive from Sokcho city. You’ll also see the Bronze Buddha of Sinheungsa (Korean Buddhist Temple) near the main entrance. In the park a cable car will take you to Gwongeumseong Fortress, a photographer’s dream.
