Limbe, founded in 1858 on the southern slopes of Mount Cameroon by the British missionary Alfred Saker, is a seaside city in Cameroon, tucked away in the far NE of the Gulf of Guinea. It lies on the Cameroon line of volcanoes, which extend from the African mainland, SW into the Atlantic along a chain of islands. Visible twenty-two kilometres inland from Limbe is twin-peaked Mount Cameroon, an active volcano of 4040 m, and which erupted as recently as February 2012. The town is popular with western tourists for its volcanic black sand beaches and the beauty of its bay.

Limbe is a charming place, blessed with a fabulous natural position between the rainforest-swathed foothills of Mt Cameroon and the dramatic Atlantic coastline. Popular with both foreign and Cameroonian tourists, Limbe Wildlife Centre (a primate zoo) is a must-see in Limbe and the SW region. The gorillas and chimpanzees are in a natural habitat and they have formed new families within the group, after being revived from the many methods of captivity they faced previously. The café at the end has great juice, smoothies and pizza at western prices and you can overlook one of the gorilla habitats while enjoying your juice! A million-dollar view!

The Limbe Botanic Garden is a lovely way to pass a few hours walking through a cared-for garden that has a large array of fascinating plants and runs alongside the river. It is very well laid out, with lots of different plants, and a natural amphitheatre. A highlight is to view the British War Graves there. Then there are the Chutes de la Lobe, a substantial river falling over a waterfall directly into the sea. There is an abundance of wildlife around along with the wooden canoes used by the fishermen, also available for trips out to sea.
