Athena really helped us to get the cruise at a discounted price, and sent e-mails for cruise and insurance and was very helpful at such a late stage in booking the cruise."

Yatsushiro lies at the southern end of the mountainous and volcanic Japanese island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands. Facing the East China Sea, it lies 67km ESE of Nagasaki. The port area overlooks the Amakusa islands, which protect the port from the East China Sea and China’s mainland city of Shanghai to the distant west. The port itself is key to Kyushu’s international trade logistics. This industrial city sits astride the Kuma River, and is crossed by major rail and road networks. A flight of 777 stairs into the nearby mountains (10 km east of the Port) is a popular attraction, providing a panoramic view of the town and the coastal areas.

At the Hinagu Onsens Center in Yatsushiro are hot springs and a geyser. The Yatsushiro Shrine and Castle remains, surrounded by moat and with Tea House are in the centre of the city. There are a number of landmarks outside of the city. A 2-3 hour drive up the scenic road from Kumamoto, the mountainous region has so much to offer. At Gokanosho, a group of five villages, is the Umenoki waterfall, two suspension bridges, twin bridges and walkways, and the Heike Jinja Museum that gives background to the area. The scenery is incredibly beautiful and quiet. v

The Kumagawa Festival is held in August, a time for dance, costumes and food stalls. The Fireworks Festival in the northern Autumn is renowned. Yatsushiro is known locally for several products and dishes. The banpeiyu fruit bears a resemblance to hugely oversized grapefruits. Karashi Renkon is a specialty which is a lotus root stuffed in a mustard-like sauce called karashi. Basashi is raw horse meat and is considered a delicacy within Japan. It is often served with onion and ginger.
