Wakayama is the capital city of Wakayama Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan. It is a shipping port and industrial city, located at the mouth of the Kinokawa River. The main attraction for tourists is the Wakayama Castle, built high on Mt. Torafusu, which also offers a good view of the city. The castle was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II, but was rebuilt in 1958 out of concrete and is open to the public as a symbol of the city and historical site. Wakayama is famous across Japan for its umeboshi (pickled apricot style fruits) and mikan (seedless mandarin).

Wakayama region produces premium fruit, and has farming, forestry and fishing industries. The scenery is remarkable, and hot springs many. Some interesting sites to visit are: a tuna filleting show at Kuroshio Market in Marina City; Koyasan, in the Koya-Ryujin Quasi-National Park, the atmospheric and picturesque mountain an hour from Wakayama that is a little-known (by tourists) gem; and Shirahama Beach with its many hot springs. The South of Wakayama prefecture is one of Japan's playgrounds, and its well known resort of Shirahama is busy during the summer season. Also worth visiting is the Awashima Shrine that is full of different dolls: human, tanuki, frogs, foxes, etc. It is free and definitely worth a look. Next to the shrine is an area to buy good luck charms.

Wakayama is home to one of Japan's over 30 Melody Roads, which are made from grooves cut into the road surface, which when driven over causes a vibration and audible rumbling transmitted through the wheels into the car body. The roads work by creating sequences of variable width groove intervals to create specific low and high frequency vibrations. About 25 km out of town on Route 370 is a 320 m section of road that plays a 30 second tune at 45 km/h.
