Tokyo, located on the eastern side of the main island of Honshu, is the core of the most populated area in the world (urban area 38M). The small fishing village of Edo was fortified in 1457 with Edo Castle (The Imperial Palace now stands at this location) and became one of the largest cities in the world by the 18th C. Its stringent policy of seclusion ended in 1854 and opened Japan to outside trade. In 1869, the 17-year-old Emperor Meiji moved to Edo, and the city was renamed Tokyo (meaning Eastern Capital). In the 20th C the city was hit by the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake, and WWII firebombing

Rebuilt around rail networks, showcasing the 1964 Olympics (and again in 2020), emerging from the 1990s recession, Tokyo has something for everyone: high-tech visions of the future, side by side with old Japan. Landmarks include Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree (world’s tallest tower), the gardens of the Imperial Palace, numerous other gardens, the popular waterfront Aqua City, Nakamise Shopping Street, and the Ginza Shopping District. Appreciate the historic temples such as the Asakusa Kannon Temple, the huge Kaminari Gate, and the Mejii Shrine. You possibly wouldn’t want to miss taking a ride on one of the bullet trains.

Ueno Park is just one of the beautiful parks with delightful floral displays around the busy metropolis. Here you will find four national museums – one featuring science, with its giant dinosaur displays, and three specialising in art works, both traditional and modern, as well as Japanese and foreign films. The Park also boasts historic shrines, a large lake and the public zoo. Also very popular is the Tokyo Disney Resort and the Hanayashike Amusement Park with its huge Ferris wheel. You will thoroughly enjoy this fast-paced city with its wealth of tourist attractions. City restaurants have 191 Michelin stars.
