Tokushima is the capital city of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island, Japan. The city of a quarter million is a typical Japanese castle town. Tokushima Castle was built in 1587. The city lies on the Yoshino River, one of Japan’s three greatest rivers, opening to a 1.3 km wide entrance to the sea. Explore this ‘aqua-metropolis’ through the Hyotanjima Boat Tour. Tokushima is surrounded by 1000m mountains and the Seto Inland Sea National Park. Mt. Bizan, reached by cable car, presents a great overview of the city. Tokushima Central Park is right in the heart of the city.

Tokushima is the centre of agriculture in the region, and originally built on a strong indigo dye industry (the blue jeans colour). The indigo is derived from the Polygonaceae plant that is cultivated in the Yoshino river basin. Indigo dyeing techniques can be watched and explored at the Ai-no-Yakata or the Aizome Kogeikan Gallery. Eighteen kilometres north of the city centre is the Naruto Bridge crossing to Awaji Island. Naruto Strait connects the Pacific Ocean to the Seto Inland Sea, and the tides (flowing up to 20 kph) produce massive whirlpools up to 20m wide that can be viewed from the bridge’s viewing walkway.

In mid-August the Awa Odori Dance attracts 1.3 million visitors, comparable to the Rio Carnival. Or, visit the Awa Odori Kaikan, which is open throughout the year. There is no dress requirement and you can join the dance on stage, being given lessons by a professional dance group. Also, there’s the Awa puppet theatre that uses very large wooden puppets (called deko), performing regularly on the stage at the Awa no Jurobe residence.
