Shingu is a small city (pop. 29,000) located in the Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is located on the largest of Japan’s islands, Honshu. It lies on the south bank of Kumano River, and the smaller town of Kiho in the Mie Prefecture on the north bank. The Kumano River – arguable one of the most beautiful rivers in all of Japan – enters the Pacific Ocean. The river is part of the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that incorporates nature scenery of the Kii peninsula with numerous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines forming a pilgrimage route.

To get around town, rent a bicycle from the Station, or just walk. Jofuku Park is worth visiting. If you are there 16 October there’s a spectacular boat race. Visit Shingu Castle (one kilometre up-stream from the river mouth), though only the foundations remain. There are many shrines temples of interest. Shingu literally means 'New Shrine' and refers to Hayatama Shrine, one of the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano that are dedicated to three nature deities in the Kumano region. Kumano Hayatama Taisha is located two kilometres up-river from the mouth.

The cruise port is six kilometres south of the river mouth and Shingu City Hall, so transport will be needed to get to some central point for walking. The local cuisine includes: Nare-zushi, a traditional type of sushi; saury, a fish dish; and grilled eel, fermented fish, whale and dolphin meat. Frozen shaved ice cream is made from the river waters.
