Sasebo is a deep water industrial port on the Japanese island of Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four major islands. It is located in the Nagasaki Prefecture. As a small fishing port, it was selected in 1883 as the site of a naval base due to its nearness to Korea (200 km distant) and China, and nearby coal fields. It continued as a naval base until the end of WWII, by which time half of the city had been destroyed. From 1945 until today it remains a major United States Naval Base. Ship building and heavy industry dominates the economy. The port also sustains a fishing fleet.

Places of interest include: Seishin Cathedral, the symbol of the city; Sasebo Seaside Park, for a view of the beautiful harbour; the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces Museum; Sasebo Zoological Park and Botanical Garden; Saikai Pearl Sea Resort, a sea-related amusement park; Tenkaiho observation point, which offers great views of the city and Kujuku islands; Yumiharidake Observatory, for panoramic views; Ishidake observatory, with beautiful panoramic views featured in the opening sequence of the 2003 Tom Cruise film The Last Samura; and the Dutch-styled theme park Huis Ten Bosch (4 million visitors a year). The latter recreates the Netherlands by displaying life-sized copies of old Dutch buildings.

The city displays a variety of seasonal flowers such as tulips, roses and dahlias, and it has many attractions for families and children. The signature local specialty is the Sasebo Burger. Browse through the Sasebo Yonkacho Shotengai shopping district. Sasebo lies at the southern end of the Sakai (marine) National Park that encompasses over 400 islands and coast lines.
