Muroran is located to the SW of Hokkaido island on a small peninsula jutting into the sea at the entrance of the Uchiura Bay. To the east is the North Pacific Ocean. Muroran was the centre of a steel industry that attracted naval bombardment on the night of 14/15 July 1945. Today, there are large cement factories, steel mills, oil refineries, and shipyards clustered around the port. Muroran holds eight specific scenic sights called Muroran-Hakkei. The most famous of them is Cape Chikyu, a paradise for sea birds and Peregrine falcons, with its white lighthouse and panoramic blue ocean. You may also get to see the 100 m towering volcanic cliffs of Uchiura Bay.

The Swan (Hakucho) Ohashi Suspension Bridge will be the first attraction to impress as you approach the port: 1380m long with a centre span of 720m, it is the longest suspension bridge in eastern Japan. A tour of the Hokkaido area can take you to an Ainu (indigenous) Village, the Valley of Hell, and a number of mountain lakes and snow-topped volcanoes. Mt Yotei (1880m) to the north, and Mt Komagatake (1100m) to the SW of Muroran can be seen on the sky line. Muroran is also a world-famous dolphin and whale watching point.

The Hakucho Bridge Beach is a popular hang-out for swimming and surfing during the summer months. Those who prefer to stay in Muroran will thoroughly enjoy the good-will of the local people. You may long remember the pleasures of visiting an art gallery with tiny figurines made of nuts and bolts, the Nakashima Shrine and its grounds, the local market where you can put on a kimono and wig and have your photo taken, see some flower arranging, and even enjoy a tea ceremony.
