Cruises visiting Oarai & all Oarai cruises for  2020

View Oarai 2020 cruises for 2 ships listing 12 cruises from Oarai with today's best deals!

Oarai is a port on Japan’s largest island Honshu, facing the Pacific Ocean. It lies 100 km NE of the port of Tokyo. The Naka River flows through the town. Local industry centres on agriculture, and the fishing industry with processed products. Tourist attractions include bathing beaches, yacht and cruiser marina, marine sports, camping site, fishing, aquarium, and a famous golf course. About three million visitors arrive each year. Walk about town and find the aquarium. Aqua World is 3.6 km north of the port, past the golf course, at the mouth of Naka River – well worth a visit.

Oarai was the setting for the 2012 Japanese television series Girls und Panzer. This is a hand-drawn and computer animation about a competition between girls' high schools practicing tank warfare as a sport. Many visit Oarai to see the original sets of this popular series. Also, Oarai is known for its big-mouthed monkfish. This large, ugly abyssal fish – ‘angler fish’ due to the small lure’ it hangs out over its mouth to attract prey – is dissected as a visitor attraction, and every part is eaten except for the bones. So try monkfish pot, perhaps at the Anglerfish Festival mid-November.

Just two kilometres north of the port is Oarai Isosazaki Shrine, on a hill and surrounded by pines; also the Oarai Sea Museum. Walk just south of the port to Oarai Sun Beach. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency operates a research centre in Oarai with a number of nuclear research reactors. The reactor Joyo lies 4.6 km on the coast south of the port, and alongside is a high-temperature engineering test reactor.
