Kumamoto is the capital city of Kumamoto Prefecture, on Japan’s fourth largest island Kyushu. The port has a sea entrance west to the East China Sea, and is surrounded by mountain peaks over 1000m. The main attraction in the city is Kumamoto Castle. One of the best fortified and imposing in Japan, the Castle was built in the 16th century and more recently some parts have been reconstructed. From the siege in 1877 began the custom of eating raw horse meat, which maintains till now the local tradition of eating Basashi as a delicacy. Within the castle grounds is the home of the original feudal lord, and beautiful gardens.

Three kilometers to the SE of Kumamoto Castle lies Suizen-ji Joju-en, a formal garden neighboring Suizenji Temple. Other places of note in Kumamoto are the Takahashi Inari Shrine, Suizenji Park, and the one-time residence of a highly-ranked samurai Hosokawa. His home and its grounds will show you how the samurai lived. Cultural venues include the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art and Kumamoto Prefectural Theater. There’s an historic Old House Yakumo Koizumi set among modern buildings. The Kumamoto City Tramway will take you to many of these city sights.

A little further out of town is Reigando, a rock cave that was the home of home of expert 17th century famous and blood-thirsty swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Fifty Kilometres to the ENE of Kumamoto is the dramatic scenery of the active volcano Mount Aso, whose crater is often off-limits to hikers when emitting poisonous gases. The crater is accessible by train, bus and rental car from Kumamoto, taking in the order of one or two hours each way.
