The volcanic island of Iwo Jima is part of a chain that makes up the southern end of the Ogasawara Islands of Japan. It actually lies 1100 km SE of the main islands of Japan. (In 1779, the island was charted as Sulphur Island, the literal translation of its official name Iwo Jima, during Captain James Cook's third surveying voyage.) The island is just 21 sq.km., with highest point Mount Suribachi at 169m. The island is littered with war relics – bunkers, tunnels, guns, ship and aircraft wrecks.

The small island is famous as the site of the Battle of Iwo Jima, fought from February to March 1945, between the United States (principally) and Japanese troops during World War II, that took the lives of 6800 Americans and 20,000 Japanese. U.S. soldiers famously pitched the U.S. flag on the island's only mountaintop, Suribachi, with its underground tunnels and bunker systems. Subsequently, the island has provided the background of many films, mini-series and documentaries. While officially registered as uninhabited, there is a naval base in operation there, with some 400 troops, together with construction workers and meteorological agency officials.

Civilians are allowed to attend memorial services for U.S. and Japanese fallen soldiers, held here periodically. Also, on organised and specialised tours, visitors can explore two abandoned airfields from World War II that are located nearby, wartime tunnels, and a war monument erected in 1985 to honour the many victims of this awful battle. For many it is a militarily and historically fascinating spot that holds lessons for us all.
