Iwakuni borders the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, on the island of Honshu in Yamaguchgi Prefecture. Its population is just 104,000. The region is an industrial area that supports a petroleum refinery, and manufacture of paper pulp, paper-making, and artificial yarns. For tourists, the most popular site is the restored Kintai Bridge (1673), with five timber arches and four stone piers on the river bed. Built in 1673 to span the Nishiki River, it was rebuilt using traditional methods from 1950 to 1953 after being destroyed by a typhoon.

Adjoining the Bridge is Kikko Park, with fountain, shops, flowers, and a viewing white snake sanctuary – Iwakuni is known for its albino snakes with ruby eyes. The Iwakuni Art Museum contains ceramics, armor, furniture, and other artifacts which were once used by feudal lords. In early spring, the sight of cherry blossoms along the Nishiki river is unforgettable. Overlooking the city is the reconstructed Iwauni Castle (1608), which preserves much of old Japan with armour, temples, and museum artifacts. Reach the castle by cable-car. From the top of the castle, you can get an impressive view of Iwakuni.

On the Nishiki river, 300-year-old cormorant fishing can be seen in the summertime, by fishermen wearing traditional clothing. In early Spring is cherry-blossom time, and in addition there are many other beautiful trees, particularly around Kikko Park. Iwakuni restaurants offer distinctive local dishes – look for the Gyoza House and The Chicken Shack. Iwakuni is famous for fresh lotus roots which many people enjoy. These are cooked in different ways such as sautéed or simmered. Just south of the city is a US Marine Corps air base. Many visitors to nearby Hiroshima, 30 km to the NE, also visit Iwakuni.
