Iriomote Island is at the southern end of Japan’s Ryukyu Island chain, just 194 km east of Taiwan. With a population of less than 2,000 and no airstrip, visitors arrive by a ferry to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and SCUBA diving around its coral reefs. The vegetation is lush subtropical forest and its climate comfortable year round. After tourism, the economy depends on fishing and pineapple growing.

Most of the dense jungle and mangrove island is protected and one third forms the Iriomote National Park. Here is the home of the nocturnal and endangered species Iriomote Cat. Interestingly, following WWII malaria was eradicated from the island.

Relax on the white sand beaches, perhaps travel to Hoshisuna (Star Beach, with star-shaped grains of sand and beach amenities) and snorkel or SCUBA dive on its of-shore reef. Take a riverboat upstream to view birds, rainforest, mangroves and waterfall.
