Hososhima Port is a district of Hyuga City in the Miyazaki Prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu. Hyuga is a small port city (pop. 63,000) located on the flatlands between the Kyushu Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The southern part of Hososhima is older and centred on a commercial fishing fleet, with many Edo Period buildings (17- 19th C). The northern part is a modern Industrial Port and manufacturing area. Near the entrance to Hososhima Port is Cape Hyuga with its exposed hexagonal pillar rocks and saw-tooth coastline, part of Nippo-Kaigan Quasi-National Park.

A Quasi-National Park just has fewer features than a National Park. From the docks take a 5 km round-trip walk past the fishing vessels to Umagase promontory and see some beautiful rocks formations, the lighthouse, and waterways forming a cross shape. Walk on the interesting rock formations. Nearby there’s a shrine approached by entering a great cave. Near the port is the Hososhima Port Museum, a three-story wooden building of historical interest. To the south of this rugged cape is a series of long, straight surfing beaches.

There’s not a lot to see in town, so be prepared to take a taxi, perhaps 13 km south to Mimitsu town. During the Edo period of 1603-1868, Mimitsu was a thriving port that served as a key hub for trade to the larger cities of Kyoto and Osaka. it is one of the chosen 100 most beautiful landscape in Japan. Here is also the start of the 7 km Miyazaki Maglev Test Track, on which was set a record of 411 kph in 1995 for a magnetic levitation railway carriage. (This high speed system is the one being promoted to run between Melbourne and Sydney by 2040.)
