Himeji, population 535,000, is the second largest city of Hyogo Prefecture after Kobe. It lies on Honshu Island facing the Inland Sea of Japan. One of the local sites worth visiting is Mount Shosha, 30 minutes from the city by bus and ropeway. Its temple complexes spread over a forested mountain top. Mount Shosha is frequently used as a filming location for historical movies and TV dramas. Besides mostly domestic productions, the Hollywood movie "The Last Samurai" was partially filmed there. But Himeji is most famous for its magnificent Himeji Castle, about 7 km from the port

Here is Japan's most beautiful surviving feudal castle. The castle is both a national treasure and a UNESCO world heritage site. Also known as White Heron Castle due to its white appearance, is Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire, and is one of Japan’s 12 original castles. It recently underwent extensive renovation and re-opened in 2015. The castle complex is over 400 years old. It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys that are connected by gates and winding paths.

Himeji Castle is also a highly popular cherry blossom spot during the short and crowded blooming season in early April. Kokoen is a Japanese style garden that opened in 1992 on the former site of the feudal lord's west residence. It is next to Himeji Castle, a short walk west of the castle's main gate. It consists of nine separate, walled gardens designed in various styles of the Edo Period. There’s the garden of the lord's residence which features a pond and waterfall, a tea garden where visitors can enjoy green tea in a tea ceremony house, a pine tree garden, a bamboo garden and a flower garden.
