Just booking our next cruise to New Zealand with Russell Cameron now! Looking forward to trying a different cruise line, however have been very happy with Royal Caribbean. It's just that another cruise line has the itinerary I prefer."

Ustica is the name of a small island, about 9 km across, situated 52 km north of Capo Gallo, Italy, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Roughly 1,300 people live in the municipality of the same name. Ustica is particularly known for scuba diving, and there are plenty of dive centres that can offer guided trips to all of these amazing hotspots. Thanks to its volcanic history, the island of Ustica offers awesome opportunities for deep diving. Notable sites include Scoglio del Medico and Grotta dei Gamberi. Snorkellers can explore Grotta Azzurra, Grotta Verde, and Grotta delle Barche.

The town of Ustica sits above the harbour and is known for the distinctive painted murals covering the exteriors of the houses. The stone Tower of Santa Maria houses an archaeological museum with a collection of Neolithic artefacts. There are plenty of casual restaurants in the area around Ustica’s central square, many of which are excellent. The island itself is made up of the remains of an ancient volcano and is known locally as the Black Pearl owing to its composition from basalt rock formations. Walkers enjoy the network of scenic coastal paths, even including cooling down with a swim in one of the natural rock pools.

Excavations begun in 1989 at Faraglioni have unearthed what was a large prehistoric village dating from the 14th to the 13th century BC. The foundations of some 300 stone-built houses were discovered, and the defensive walls of the settlement are among the strongest fortifications of any period known in Italy. There are also reminders from the 1950s, when Ustica was used as an island prison. Benito Mussolini banished thousands of political opponents to Ustica, often as many as 1,500 at a time. The town is overshadowed by the Torre di Santa Maria (Tower of St. Mary).
