Stromboli is a small island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just off the north coast of Sicily, in Italy. It one of the eight Aeolian Islands that form a volcanic arc. Stromboli volcano (926 m) is one of Italy’s three active craters (the others being Vesuvius 240 to the north, and Etna 120 km to the south). There are three active craters at its peak. The volcano has been in almost one continuous eruption for the past 20,000 years. Because it is constantly active with minor eruptions visible from the surrounding area (and cruise ships), the island's nickname is 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'.

The island’s permanent population of around 500 are scattered between three small villages: San Bartolo and San Vincenzo in the northeast, and the smaller village Ginostra in the southwest. Hydrofoil and ferry services provide tourist access and most visitors take guided tours up the volcano. Transport is limited to walking, small cars and motorbikes. six-hour round-trip treks up Stromboli aren't easy walks. You should be well-equipped, healthy and in good physical condition when going there.

There are good restaurants, coffee shops and fresh fish cuisine all around the island. Interestingly, in Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) by Jules Verne, the conclusion of the novel is set on Stromboli. Further, the food ‘Stromboli’ – cousin to pizzas – was created in the USA in the 1950s, named for the then recently released movie Stromboli, notorious for an off-screen affair between married actress, Ingrid Bergman, and married director, Roberto Rossellini.
