Reggio, or Reggio Calabria (pop. 560,000), is the largest city of Calabria, Southern Italy. It is located on the ‘toe’ of Italy, facing west to the Strait of Messina and the island of Sicily. It has a modern urban layout following the earthquake of 1908 that destroyed most of the city. Reggio is a major economic centre for the region. The city centre consists mainly of Liberty (Art Nouveau) buildings. It is known as the “city of Bronzes” after the Bronzes of Riace in its archaeological museum; the “city of Fatamorgana” after the unusual mirages sometimes seen across the Strait of Messina.; and the “city of bergamot” after the citrus bergamia cultivated in the region and used for perfume production.

The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia houses a massive archaeological collection from sites in ancient Magna Graecia, the then coastal cities of southern Italy that were populated by Greek settlers from the 8th C BC. This is a significant museum and worthy of an extended visit. Ongoing discoveries are displayed in local museums near to where they are found. The city has many museums, villas, mansions, churches, ancient city walls, excavations, remains of Roman baths, and art galleries. On the waterfront is the Arena dello Stretto, that hosts musical and theatrical events.

The Bible records the apostle Paul arriving at Rhegium, one of the city’s many former names, c. 59 AD on his captive way to Rome. He would have had to navigate past the promontory Scylla on the Italian side of the strait and the whirlpool Charybdis on the Sicilian side, both considered hazardous by ancient mariners. The history of Reggio is reflected in its 11 names, each corresponding to dominant rulerships of the time. Other forces shaping the city and region have been earthquakes and organised crime.
