Porto Ercole is a Mediterranean village on the south-east of Monte Argentario, a peninsula in the Tuscany region of Italy. It lies just 55 km to the NW of Civitavecdchia, the busy cruise port for Rome. Once an island, Monte Argentario is now joined to the mainland by three narrow spits of land that form two lagoons. The other main village on the ‘island’ is Porto Santo Stefano on the northern coast. This pretty seaside resort is one of the most famous in Tuscany, associated with pleasure, good food, boats and relaxation. The fortresses of La Rocca, Filippo, Santa Carolina and Stella dominate the hillside above the perfect little natural harbour.

The town was founded by the Etruscans, conquered by the Romans, and turned into a port. In 1296 the Countess of Sovana had a square tower built, called the Torre di Terra. It was the first part of what would become the Fortress of Porto Ercole. Other fortresses nearby are Forte Filippo, the Torre del Mulinaccio, and Forte Santa Caterina. Impressive is Palazzo dei Governanti, which stands on the striking piazza di Santa Barbara, dominating the port, with the fifteenth-century Bastione di Santa Barbara by its side.

Porto Ercole (“Port Hercules”) has a wonderful vibe during the summer season when the long seaside promenade is filled with the 'beau monde' strolling by the shops, cafes and restaurants next to the boats anchored in the harbour. Beach lovers will adore Feniglia beach, while perhaps seizing the opportunity to check out the nature park along the sand. Walk through the oldest part of town via the narrow streets to the Church of Sant’Erasmo, whose interior guards the tombs of Spanish rulers.
