Monopoli (aka Monopolis) is a town in Italy in the province of Bari, about 40 km southeast from Bari. (Imagine if your foot was in the ‘boot’ of Italy, your heel would be touching Monopoli.) This is the beautiful Apulia region of Italy with the Adriatic coastline on the edge of the city. It is important as an agricultural, industrial and tourist centre. The area was first settled anciently as the city of Egnatia, Monopoli being a smaller outer village 10km to the NW. During Roman occupation Emperor Trajan built the Via Traiana (108-110 BC), as the road of choice between Rome down to the coast nearest to Greece.

Historically, Monopoli came under attack by many invaders, as evidenced by remains of its strong fortifications. It became part of the newly unified state Kingdom of Italy in 1860. In 2012 the city of Monopoli created an archaeological park around the remains of the major ancient road Via Traiana. Monopoli has many historical sites: the Castle of Charles V (1525) with its old cannons; the coastal castle of St Stephen (1086) now a Benedictine monastery; Jerusalem Hospital (1350); Paloazzo Palmieri (18th C); and Monopoli Cathedral (18th C).

Stroll around the harbour and old town with its narrow streets, visit the seafood and coffee restaurants, view the seascapes, in a town not filled with tourists. It’s a photographer’s dream, with narrow alleys, cobbled streets, flower boxes in windows, arches, towering spires, old stone walls, and crystal clear water. The Centro Storico is a must see. Visitors cannot speak more highly of Monopoli. To see the excavations of the Via Traiana travel 11km south and it’s on the water edge. You’ll learn much about Roman history in the museum.
