Vopnafjordur (Vopnafjörður) is a village and municipality in Northeast Iceland, standing on a peninsula in the middle of a mountainous bay of the same name. The main industries of Vopnafjörður are fish processing, agriculture, tourism and other services. Vopnafjörður attracts salmon fishers, artists, and celebrities. The largest river to run into the bay is Hofsá, one of the best salmon fishing rivers in the country. Krossavík Mountains at 1,077 metres, tower over the bay. The town was settled originally by Vikings, and their history is recorded in the Vopnfirðinga saga, one of the classic sagas of Icelanders, epic family histories written in the 13th C.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries many of the local Icelanders emigrated to the USA and Canada, as you can learn about in the East Iceland Emigration Center. The current town population is around 670. Local sights include Selardalur Swimming Pool, a geothermal swimming pool on the banks on the river Selá. It provides a little warmth in the middle of nowhere, and there’s a fly fishing stream nearby. A must-visit is the historic farm Bustarfell, a turf house built in 1770 and lived in by the same family until 1966, now a regional museum.

Kaupvangur in the heart of town is a museum in remembrance of the thousands of emigrants who left the region in the wake of the disastrous Askja volcanic eruption in 1875. Driving south towards Fljótsdalshérað, the 655 m high pass about 50 km from Vopnafjörður provides a spectacular view for travellers. The road is quite steep. Driving further towards Egilsstadir are indescribable views of the black sand beach at Heradhssandur
