Easy to contact by phone or email. Regular correspondence prior to cruise departure. Liked the wallet sent out with info. However, we did not use the lanyards supplied. There is no quick release mechanism to prevent accidental choking if it catches on something. I thought quick release catches were a mandatory safety feature of modern lanyards?"

Patreksfjordur is a small fishing village in NW Iceland, with a population of around 680 persons. Spread along a shoreline of 220m, it has an artificial harbour for its the fishing fleet, and a fish processing plant. Other industries, like fish farming and services, are also increasingly important. In addition to its hundred or so houses are a campsite, four guesthouses, hotel, restaurants, cafes, and service buildings. The village lies on one of half a dozen fjords in the West Fjords region. There are natural hot pots you will find within easy driving distance from the town.

Tourism has been on the rise in Patreksfjörður, not surprisingly, as the village has many gems, such as Látrabjarg cliffs, Rauðasandur beach and Dynjandi waterfall, all within easy reach. Rauðasandur (Red Sand) beach is 12 km long and up to hundreds of metres wide. It is located about 25 km by road to the south of Patreksfjordur. The colours of the sand and water vary during the day, and the region reflects tranquility and beauty. Behind the beach cliffs rise vertically, home to birds. About 80 km drive to the NE of Patreksfjordur is the striking Dynjandi waterfall, unlike any other, a falling like a fan-shaped drape from the hills.

About 60 km drive to the west brings you to the cliff edge of the most westerly part of Iceland, and indeed Europe. Látrabjarg is a 14 km long bird cliff, as steep as it gets, so the birds live safe from foxes and minks. This has made the birds almost fearless, which has provided stunning photographic opportunities. Látrabjarg is the most visited tourist attraction in the Westfjords. Back in town there are a folk museum and a pirate museum, both well worth visiting.
