Husavik is a town in Norourþing municipality on the north coast of Iceland on the shores of Skjalfandi bay, that is about 15 km across. The town of around 2000 inhabitants depends mainly on fishing and tourism. It has become the centre of whale-watching in Iceland. Whales of many species frequently enter the bay, and visitors can charter a traditional renovated fishing boat for viewing. According to the Landnámabók ("Book of Settlement"), Húsavík was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norse man, about 870 AD. Today visitors will find here a good variety of restaurants in historic locations, and a most beautiful landmark wooden church Húsavíkurkirkja, built in 1907.

Being located just 58 km south of the Arctic Circle, the town enjoys almost 24 hours of daylight in summer, and the midnight sun often gives the sky an unbelievably beautiful glow. In winter when the nights are long the dark sky is frequently decorated with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and stars. It is also renowned for its year-round geothermal heated outdoor pool with hot pots, a steam bath and a special warm pool and slides for children. The region of Mývatn, with its interesting geology and diverse animal life, is 50 km to the south. Interestingly, silica mined from Lake Mývatn is exported from the port.

The 250 km Diamond Circle offers a tour past fascinating rock formations and waterfalls. In town are numerous interesting museums, a few of which are: the Húsavík Whale Museum, located in the downtown by the harbour; a civic museum about culture and biology, that includes stuffed polar bear and ancient boats; and The Exploration Museum, a museum about the history of human exploration. A monument honouring the Apollo astronauts that trained around Húsavík during the 1960s is located outside the museum. Look out for the Design Factory in the old Fisherman’s stockroom.
