Flatey Island is the largest of a group of islands in the fjord Breiðafjörður, close to the NW coast of Iceland. It’s name means ‘flat’, and the island is just 1.8km long and only 360m wide. The island has a scattering of houses, mostly used in summer, and only a few people live there during winter to maintain services. Summertime brings owners of second houses, tourists, and domestic visitors. A single road runs two-thirds the length of the island, starting at the ferry terminal or ‘old harbour’ and passing through the ‘old village.’ The houses and buildings are beautifully maintained and colourfully painted.

The island is a car-free zone. It runs sheep, and is a habitat for migratory birds, in particular puffins. Walk around the island to see the birdlife and find small boat wrecks on the rocky shores. There’s a white timber church in the centre of Flatey, built in 1926. The interior is painted with remarkable scenes of island life, in the Catalonian style. Next to the church is a small yellow library house built in 1864, the oldest in Iceland, and which was once the home of the Flateyjarbók ("Flat-island book"), an important medieval Icelandic manuscript, and which is now in the Árni Magnússon Institute, Reykjavic.

Visitors come to take in the beauty of the island, which has been the set for a number of movies. You’ll meet day-comers arriving on the morning ferry during the three summer months. There’s a restaurant and hotel and camping ground, and a few sheep roam everywhere placidly. Despite the smallness of the island, visitors speak highly of its beauty and wish to return.
