Cruises visiting Foynes & all Foynes cruises for  2019-2020

Foynes - aka Faing - is a small town and major port in County Limerick in the mid-west of Ireland, located at the edge of hilly land on the southern bank of the Shannon Estuary. It is noteworthy for having been, in the early years of aviation, the last port of call on the eastern shore of the Atlantic for flying boats. Surveying flights for flying boat operations were made by Charles Lindbergh in 1933 and a terminal was begun in 1935. This resulted in claims to fame, as their invention of Irish Coffee in order to alleviate the suffering of cold and wet passengers, remains extremely popular.

Foynes Flying Boat Museum is situated in the old Flying Boat Terminus in Foynes, right opposite the semi-derelict (and therefore fascinating) old railway station and on the banks of the Shannon. A 17-minute film on the history of the terminus and the flying boat starts the experience, and then there are audio-visual and artefact displays that make one feel very much swept back into the pre-war period. The one flying boat open for visitors is superb: it really makes the visitor think about what it must have been like to cross the Atlantic in such a vehicle, and the river and maritime sections also evoke the past.

Many visit Knockpatrick Gardens, and actually set out walking from Shanagolden to Knockpatrick. They receive a warm welcome form the proprietors at the gate. The owners, Tim and Helen O'Brien, have an encyclopedic knowledge of gardening in Ireland and had an array of magnolias, hydrangeas and azaleas. A guided tour of the garden and grounds is informative and interesting for all, and includes a history of the grounds and origins of the plants. The views from the gardens are spectacular. All visitors highly recommend their visit. If it is inspiration and solace you are looking for, you will find it in this paradise of fusion gardens.
