Ternate is a visually dramatic cone-shaped island in the Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia. Dominated by the volcanic Mount Gamalama, its foothills are home to groves of trees that produce the condiment that has become an essential ingredient in many recipes, cloves. The capital of the province of North Maluku, Ternate City, is also found here. Worth visiting are the Sultan’s palace built in 1796 that is now partly an historical museum, the Sultan’s Mosque with its amazing timber interior, and Fort Aranye that was home to the Dutch East Indies Company and Dutch Governors.

Today, the town of Ternate is the capital city of the province of North Maluku, home to two-thirds of the island’s population, who are predominantly Muslim. Here you can visit historical relics and observe local cultural traditions. The city is a modern hub and a base for the commercial activities of the island. It has historical attractions, transportation links, and tourism services. The city is also in the midst of development to reform the building and structural damage sustained during the 1999 conflict between Muslims and Christians. Interestingly, Ternate Bay is popular for fishing, and visitors hire motorboats to take them to the best fishing grounds.

The business district of Ternate is an interesting place to take a walk and see the tasteful food sellers that adorn the streets. The walkway is so long it has five names. There are also plans to develop a mega mall. The volcanic landscape of Ternate has given the island its fertile soil and beaches with black glittering sands. Today, all around the island are colorful boats in various sizes lying in the shallow turquoise water, shielded by swaying coconut trees. If energetic, you can make the 5 hour guided and safe climb to the 1270m summit of the volcano, or visit both the spectacular lakes and the fine beaches.
