Cruises visiting Sumenep & all Sumenep cruises for  2019

Sumenep is Madura Island’s most interesting town, situated just north of the eastern tip of Java, Indonesia. Madura is bordered to the south by the Strait of Madura and Bali Sea, and to the north and east by the Java Sea. Sumenep is the capital of Semenep Regency. The district was ruled by kings from the 13th C, and had its glory days in its 19th C sultanate, though under the Dutch East India Company. The Dutch East Indies finally gave way to independent Indonesian rule in 1948.

The history, culture and architecture of Sumenep can be seen in the Palace/Kraton Museum (such as a 500 kg hand-written Quran), which include relics of the Hindu kingdoms. Sumenep Palace is in front of the museum. Sumenep Jamik Mosque has a distinctive architecture. There’s also a Chinese temple. Kalianget Old Town is 10km on the eastern side of the city, with relics of a salt factory, colonial architecture, and defences built by the colonial Dutch government. Traditional Madurese houses can be found in some areas towards the coast, also the colourful boats on the sea shore.

Tirta Sumekar Indah is a bathing pool complex in Sumenep, west of the city. It is surrounded by a teak tree plantation and cashew trees, and not far from the cemetery of the kings, Asta Tinggi, one of many fascinating cemeteries. Pool complexes are a popular with the locals on weekends and school holidays. Sumenep Square is a well-presented park, Taman Adipura, a horticulturalist’s delight; and the night markets provide a wide range of culinary specialties. Visitors can obtain fine batik cloth, wood carvings, Dutch antiques – browsing through shops and stalls is fascinating. And hopefully you’ll see some of the famous Madura water buffalo races on Saturday morning at the Giling stadium.
