Meatimiarang Island is part of Indonesia's outer islands located in the Timor Sea, between the countries of Timor Leste (East Timor) and Australia. The island is part of the Regency of West Southeast Maluku, Maluku. Of all Indonesia’s 17,000 islands, this is one of the closest to Darwin in Australia (524 km away). The island itself is boomerang-shaped, 2.9 km long and 600 m wide at the centre, one of a crescent string of islands stretching E-W. This uninhabited island is surrounded by a reef and massive lagoon, of which it is, at high tide, about the only part above sea level. Its highest point is 9 m above the sea.

With the exception of a similar island to its NE, all other islands in Maluku province are substantial (and mostly inhabited) islands. Explorer cruise vessels from Australia’s Kimberley region visit this part of Indonesia to be credited with international travel and the benefits that come from that. Since no one lives on this island, and there are no facilities, snorkelling is the big attraction. Indonesian waters are noted for their corals and reef fish. To the north of Meatimiarang the ocean descends abruptly in the Banda Sea; and to the south into a deep ocean trench. Expect good fishing.

The new island-nation of Timor Leste lies 130 km to the west. To the south are the valuable and immense gas fields beneath the Timor Sea. The other islands of Maluku have been known for centuries as the Spice Islands, and the subject of colonial competition and Dutch rule. The Indonesian archipelago lies on a Ring of Fire of volcanic activity. But the volcanoes, spices and minerals certainly are not part of Pulau Meatimiarang.
