The Derawan Islands are in the province of East Kalimantan in Indonesia. They include Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, Panjang, and Samama Island and submerged reefs and islets. They are located in the Sulawesi Sea, on the coastal shelf of East Kalimantan. While the islands of Derawan and Maratua are inhabited, the island of Sangalaki is managed under private tourism management and the other islands have no human settlement.

Famous for reefs ideal for scuba diving, and for the large gatherings of manta rays, the visibility can be fairly low in some areas due to silt from rivers. The terrains at Derawan are varied-from walls and fringing reef to caverns. Big green turtles (chelonia mydas), whitetip leopard and nurse sharks, schooling barracudas, napoleon wrasses, cuttle fish, spanish mackerel, jacks and batfishes, and ornamental reef fishes hang out in record densities and diversity.

The islands are becoming better known as a tourist destination and various bodies are keenly interested in maintaining its viability and beauty.
