Bawean Island lies in the Java Sea of Indonesia, about 150 km north of the major Javanese port of Surabaya. The island is fairly circular, about 15 km across. In the centre of the island is the highest point at 655 m. Of its population of 70,000, about 77 percent are females, due to many of the males working in other parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore: hence its name 'Island of Women.' Sangkapura on the south coast is the main port, and Tambak is on the north coast. There are several large underwater petroleum and gas fields in the region, very important to Indonesia’s export program.

Tourists come to see local natural attractions, which include Lake Kastoba, hot springs Kebundaya and Taubat, waterfalls Lachchar and Patar Selamat, the caves in the central part of the island, plus sandy beaches and coral reefs on the coast. Much of the forest was replaced by teak plantations in the early 20th C. The islanders are mainly engaged in growing of rice, maize, potato and coconuts. Fishing is an important economic activity in the Java Sea, which supports over 3000 species of marine life. The Sea is shallow with a mean depth of just 46 m.

The graves of the Muslim Sheik Maulana and ruler Purbonegoro are revered on the island, are visited by Muslim pilgrims from other parts of Indonesia, and are the main historical attractions of Bawean. The area around the Java Sea is also a popular tourist destination. Scuba diving offers a chance to explore and photograph underwater caverns, wrecks, coral, sponges, and other marine life. Historically, Dutch sailors and the Dutch East India Company used Bawean as a resting stop between Java and Kalimantan (Borneo) in the 16th and 17th C. Those were the days of the Dutch monopoly of the spice trade.
