Bawemataluwo (or Bawomataluo, meaning “Sun Hill”) village is situated about 10 km inland from Teluk Dalam, the port and capital of South Nias. Nias is an island that lies 100 km off the west coast of North Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. The island is distinctive by language (Nias) and culture of its 800,000 inhabitants. The Bawemataluwo settlement sits atop a 260 m hill. Driving inland from Teluk Dalam, the road rises slowly between houses, roadside shops and busy roadside activity. Impressive are the larger buildings with their steep roofs of sago thatch up to 20 meters high, distinctive of Nias. Niasans are highly skilled builders: no nails, and earthquake proof.

The design of houses in Bawemataluwo is credited to 18th C King Laowo who established the Kingdom in the region and whose descendants still live there. The village street layout forms a “T”, both arms of 250-300m stone-paved roads. Village features are megalith monuments, graves, the house of the Chief or King of the community (the "oldest and largest on Nias”), large stone throne, and 500 houses carved intricately, each with its household head, and housing a population of 7,000. Yong men are inducted into war training by jumping 1.8 – 2.2 m stone pyramids (once fitted with sharp sticks on the top), and war dancing.

Nias was a strictly hierarchical warrior society ruled by powerful chieftains, until brought under full Dutch control in 1914. So a visit to this village will enthral visitors. Find out about family relationships, marriage customs, village administration, the value of pigs and gold, and the abandoned practice of head hunting. Though a majority are Christian, ceremonial rituals, ancestor veneration and divination remain firmly entrenched. And yes, a team off young men regularly perform the stone jump for visitors to Bawemataluwo, and hopefully you can view a scary war dance in full tribal war regalia.
