Arguni is a small island off the west coast of West Papua province of Indonesia. It lies just off-shore of the Bomberai peninsula, which is south of the distinctive Bird’s Head peninsula, at the head of Bintuni Gulf. The island covers less than 5 The local language Arguni is spoken by about 150 people. On the south side of the island are pearl farm buoys and cages floating in the warm clear water. Fishing is the main local industry: Kampung Arguni pulls in about 4 tonnes of fish each month.

Along the coast are mangrove swamps and many interesting limestone islets and formations, Papuan rock art (notably hand and foot stencils), burial caves, and villages (some on stilts) along the shore line. Dudumunir Cave on Arguni Island, excavated in 1937-1938, revealed at least a 2000 year history. While Arguni is in the Fakfak Regency, it still has a traditional king (a functionless title), Raja Hanaf Pauspaus of Arguni, one of many Kings of Indonesia. The first European to visit the area, Nicolaes Vinck, in 1663, reported kingdom enclaves that bartered birds of paradise and slaves for cloth and other materials from western islands.

The region to the east of Arguni is the Bintuni basin, a mainly gas prone, prolific hydrocarbon province, with several giant gas discoveries already in production. Further into the gulf are several ports that service the LNG and petroleum industries: Seventy kilometres to the east of Arguni is the port for Tangguh LNG; nearby is Babo.
