Pulau Aiduma is a small island on the south coast of the West Papua province of Indonesia. If you picture Papua New Guinea as a flying duck, then Triton Bay is just under its “neck”, and Aiduma Island is at the south end of the bay, two kilometres off the mainland. The island is in one of the most remote regions of the Indonesian Archipelago, only reached by sea as there are no significant ports nearby. The island is the site of outstanding diving. Beneath its waters are beautiful soft corals – one count lists 959 types of coral fish and 471 types of coral. Coral fish life includes schools of large blue-ring angelfish, clownfish, striped angelfish and lionfish.

The bay displays an impressive level of soft coral coverage. Epaulette sharks can be seen walking over the reefs, the only known shark that walks on its pectoral fins. Giant groupers lurk in sheltered spots, while schools of jacks and fusiliers dart around en masse. Squadrons of bumphead parrotfish charge around chomping the coral into fine sand, watched by ever-present turtles. The black coral forests are awesome in scale and never fail to impress. In these waters Bryde’s whales (to 12m) find their home. The vicinity of Aiduma Island offers world class diving and you are likely to have the reefs to yourselves; the remoteness is your guarantee of exclusivity.

Above the water is also fascinating with lush green landscapes and ancient cave paintings. In one section the high limestone cliffs display extensive pre-historic drawings and carvings coloured orange, white and black. Nearby this region is where Alfred Russel Wallace, the contemporary and equal of Charles Darwin, wrote of his explorations in “The Malay Archipelago” (his book title) around 1858. He sent thousands of wild-life specimens to the British Museum, to show Europeans the beauty of Birds of Paradise, though of course today they are protected. Needless to say, very few visitors ever get to this region – it is indescribably special.
