Porec is a town and municipality on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, Croatia. Given the town’s long history, a visit to the old town is a must, due to its numerous historical sites, particularly the 6th century Euphrasian Basilica which is wonderfully preserved and is well known for its beautiful gold mosaics. The Basilica is really a collection of various buildings, including a baptistry and the Bishop’s Palace. The Basilica was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Marafor Square is where a Roman forum was once situated, and parts of two temples – to Neptune and Mars – can still be seen there. North of Marafor Square the once Parliament Buildings, now a museum, can be found. These were converted from a Franciscan church that was built in the 13th and 14th centuries.

In the historical city centre are found: museums; galleries in the most valuable city palaces; and interestingly, many palaces that are home to people, as they were centuries ago. One section of the city ramparts and towers is still preserved. Here are found a restaurant in the Pentagonal tower and a pub in the Round tower. Now, besides the Basilica, it is possible to visit Euphrasius' bishopric, opened in the year 2000 as an architectural monument and the church museum. If you’re in the main part of town and fancy a bit of swimming and sunbathing, head to nearby Sveti Nikola island which can be reached by a regular boat ride of just a few minutes.
