Cruises visiting Mljet Island & all Mljet Island cruises for  2019-2020

View Mljet Island 2019-2020 cruises for 1 ships listing 4 cruises from Mljet Island with today's best deals!

Mljet is a small island in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, the most southerly and easterly of the larger Adriatic islands. It is elongated, 36km by 3km, one of many such islands along the coast. The more prominent Croatian tourist destination of Dubrovnik lies 30km to the ESE. Mljet has a population of just over a thousand people. They live in about 20 settlements around the island, connected by a two-lane paved road. Mainland Croatia, also the seaport of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lie 35km to the east. (Interestingly, Mljet and Malta have the same name in Greek and Roman, meaning “honey”.)

There is no airport and Sobra is the main ferry port on the mid north coast. The smaller ferry port of Polace in the northwest holds the entrance to the national park of Mljet as well as tour operators and bicycle and kayak rental. The northwestern part of the island includes an inland sea as well as a small island within it. It has been a national park since 1960, and is a beautiful area that attracts tourists. Most of the island is covered in forest, and some depressions below sea level are ‘mud lakes’.

At the eastern tip of Mljet is the tiny village of Saplunara, which boasts an excellent restaurant and three sandy beaches. The climate is Mediterranean so swim or snorkel the lakes and beaches and have lunch at the cute restaurant in the monastery on the island in the middle of the large lake! Curiously, to rid the island of snakes, mongooses were introduced in the early 1900s, hence there are few birds left on the island today.
