Komiža is a small town of 1500 that faces a bay on the west coast of Vis Island, Croatia, in the Adriatic Sea. The port has a small fishing marina and a number of small pebbly beaches. An 8km road links it to the larger town of Vis on the Eastern side of the island, and from where ferries link to the mainland. The island’s economy is based on farming, winemaking, fishing and fish processing, seafaring, and more recently tourism. Indeed Komiža is famous for its wines. The town offers good visitor opportunities and a number of cultural and historic sites, monasteries and fortresses.

Visitors who have taken a boat trip around the island highly recommend their experience. These trips also call at Biševo. Komiža is well known for its close proximity to the island of Biševo, 9km to the SE, which is visited by 10,000 tourists each year who come to see the unique Blue Grotto. The grotto is one of the best known natural beauty spots on the Adriatic and a popular show cave because of the glowing blue light that appears around 11am to noon. Visitors also call at the Green Grotto.

The island of Vis is the most distant large island in the Central Dalmatian coast, and experiences a moderate climate suited to growing palms, carobs, olives, grapes and lemons. Fishing boats unique to Komiža are called falkuša, with triangular sail. Interestingly, Komižini fishermen who emigrated to America and settled in Washington state helped pioneer the North Pacific salmon fishing industry. And they also developed thriving California sardine fisheries.
