Trujillo is located on a bluff overlooking the Bay of Trujillo, on the Caribbean side of Honduras. The old Spanish fort, with its canons as well as the history of this colonial town, sits on the. An almost volcano-like mountain looms behind the city, making for a magnificent physical setting. It is a tropical paradise in the rough, and not a Holiday Inn or Motel in sight. Then there’s the beach right at the base of the centre of town, which has a pleasant sand surface and a lot of activities on offer, including natural hot springs.

The Campo del Mar Nature Park has been designed to provide a sense of the native flora and fauna. Gardens growing native trees and products are well designed, while there are also large spacious enclosures where spider-monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, pizotis and racoons live and play. The Garifuna fishing villages are picturesque and reachable by an unpaved road. Only recently have most inhabitants of these towns upgraded their houses from mud and thatch to concrete. For a small fee the children will cut a coconut and insert a straw so you can enjoy the milk.

The parish church at Trujillo was once the Bishopric of Honduras, although the original structure must have vanished with some pirate invasion since the current structure dates to 1930. Within the plaza are various memorials, the most notable of which is to Juan de Medina, the founder and mayor of the city in 1525. Walking the cobblestone streets of the inner city is definitely worthwhile. Also on offer is a wide variety of Garifuna artisan items in La Negra, Artesma and Gariate. Not to be missed is the beach at Hotel Coco Pando, where you can learn how to dance the punta, play drums, and have your hair braided.
