Puerto Cortés is a city of 126,000 located on the north Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is the largest seaport in Central America. The port is in a bay, and adjacent to the bay the city is built around the sizeable Alvarado lagoon, its longest diameter 4.5 km. The city has developed in the 20th C after the railroad reached the port, and its major export has been bananas. Currently bananas, coffee, coconuts, hardwood, and flour are the principal exports. The original name of the city, Puerto de Caballos, was changed in 1869 to honour the Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés.

In 1974 Hurricane Fifi inflicted serious damage on the city, but by the late 1970s it had recovered. Hurricane Mitch again severely damaged the city and surrounding region in October 1998, and recovery was slow and difficult. This hot and rainy city is also a prosperous industrial centre. the city is slowly but steadily rebranding itself as a tourist destination. On the beach you’re sure to hear Garifuna music and dancing, though avoid being there during religious festival days – it’s crowded.

Puerto Cortés is not an especially attractive city. Visitors often stay at or visit the coastal town of Omoa, 12 kilometres to the west, with its striking feature the Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa, an 18th-century Spanish fort. Or, they drive inland for an hour to the economic (but unsafe) capital San Pedro Sula.
