The Island of Guam, the Western-most territory of the United States, is an island in the western South Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way from Hawaii to the Philippines. Along the Tumon Bay beachfront, the island's glitzy duty-free shopping centre is a shopper’s paradise, while the gleaming white sand and crystal clear, warm waters for swimming, snorkelling, or just relaxing, are equally as appealing. In Tumon, visit the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica, and the National Museum of the Dulce Nombre de Maria that features changing displays of inspirational art created by local artists. Interestingly, many visitors now take the time to visit the entire island. Of particular interest are the many historical sites from the World War II era, such as taking a 50m dive to explore a sunken Japanese Zero fighter, plane.

Then there’s the unspoilt, friendly, and historic village of Umatac with its monument to the explorer Magellan, opposite of which stand the ruins of St. Dionicio Church first built in1690.Take the time to visit the decorative Utama bridge with it spiral staircase towers as well as Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, both of which offer stunning hilltop views of Umatac Bay. On a clear day the aesthetic qualities of the sky and bay defy belief. Then there’s the giant gilded statue of two young local lovers who jumped to their deaths that stands atop a 125m limestone cliff that also provides stunning views. Of special interest is the charming Chamorro Village that is not only a delightful spot to shop for handicrafts, but especially to taste the local cuisine.

At all stops, take the time to take a trip to chat with the locals and discover a genuine community with a warm and welcoming attitude towards outsiders as well as a desire to restore their own culture. The south is a must-see, with its rural collection of sleepy historical villages, and stunning waterfalls. The north is mainly taken up by the US military Base, but it contains Ritidian Point, a national wildlife refuge and a simply sublime stretch of Guam’s most pristine sandy beaches, featuring swaying palms, azure water, and golden sands.
