Punta Gorda (pop. 5000) is the southernmost town in Belize (formerly British Honduras, now a British Commonwealth country), in Central America. Belize is bordered by Mexico on the north, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. It is a seaport and fishing centre. Punta Gorda is capital of the Toledo District that features some of the most pristine rainforests, extensive cave networks, coastal lowland plains, and offshore cays. It is also home to a wide range of cultures—from Mopan and Kekchi Maya, to Creole, the Garifuna, East Indians, Mennonites, Mestizos, and descendants of US Confederate settlers.

In 1823 Garifuna people (‘Black Caribs’) from St Vincent emigrated to this part of Central America. They established fishing villages in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, bringing with them their culture, food, language and music. Garifuna music styles are known for their heavy use of percussion instruments and distinctive drumming. Belize has given birth to a resurgence in Garifuna music in recent years. Listen out for their music in restaurants and clubs. There are Maya ruins nearby, the nearest being Lubaantun (26 km NW in a strait line) and Nim Li Punit (250 km to the N in a straight line). Nim Li Punit is a Classic Period Mayan site with ballcourts and carved stelae. Lubaantun is a drystone constructed site with ruined pyramids and stone tombs

Farms in the district produce cacao for making chocolate. Each year, during the Commonwealth Day weekend, the district hosts the Chocolate Festival of Belize. Farmers grow additional crops such as coffee, yams, sweet potato, chili, hot peppers, avocado, oranges and plantain for sale at the market in Punta Gorda. Fishing is by dug-out canoe and diving for lobsters. The Port Honduras Marine Reserve just north of Punta Gorda Town is a protected area. Tourism is a relatively new industry, where visitors seek out protected areas, wildlife, excellent birding and the offshore cayes.
