Cruises visiting Volos & all Volos cruises for  2019-2020

View Volos 2019-2020 cruises for 5 ships listing 6 cruises from Volos with today's best deals!

Volos is a coastal port city situated about midway on the Greek mainland, 326 km north of Athens. This picturesque town earned its place in history as the birthplace of Achilles and the port from which Jason set out to find the Golden Fleece. It has a remarkably large proportion of modern buildings, built after the devastating earthquake of 1955. There are, however, some remaining majestic buildings from the neo-classical era, and the architectural mix makes for a very attractive city. On the NW side of the town, to the right of the Lárisa road between the railroad and the river, remains of Mycenaean buildings have been uncovered.

There is just so much that you can do from this city, including a day trip to the fortress-like Meteora monastries that were built atop rock pillars in order to protect the monks from invaders. Sitting 300 m above the plains of Thessally, they truly are a remarkable sight. Visit the close mountain villages of Portaria and Makrynitsa from where the view of Volos is magnificent. Here visitors find the traditional architecture of the Pelion mansions, and a fascinating Neolithic site that provides a glimpse of the ancient past and includes the oldest acropolis in Greece.

Volos itself offers the excitement of a fast-moving city typical of Greece, with its shopping and its eating houses, many of which are centred on the lovely harbour. Take a walk around and you will find a wide variety of shops, and hidden bars and cafes especially around St. Nikolaos Square. Also fascinating are the nearby quiet villages with cobblestone streets and quaint churches. The Volos Municipal Gallery is housed in the Town Hall. It comprises a fine collection of paintings, sculpture and engravings by modern Greek artists.
