Cruises visiting Spetses & all Spetses cruises for  2019

Spetses is a port and small Grecian island lying about 90 km SW of Athens (and named by the Venetians for its position on a major trade route.) It lies just a few kilometres off the Corinth Peninsula facing the southern Aegean Sea. The town itself has a permanent population of just 4000, stretching from the Old Port to Dapia with its ferry terminal. The town is notable for its lack of cars – six taxis excluded. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Piraeus, the port for Athens. All but a few of the island’s population live in Spetses town.

To see the island take a horse-drawn carriage or moped around the very winding road that is also the path for the popular annual mini-marathon. There’s also a famous April tri-athalon. The streets of Spetses are narrow and cobbled. Sites to visit include: The House of Bouboulina, their 19th local heroine; The House of Hatzigiannia Mexis that displays the island’s history; church and cathedral; and historic reminders of the island’s long naval traditions. To the south of the modern ferry terminal is the old port with a modern marina. Facing the terminal is the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, which gives the portside the atmosphere of the French Riviera.

This party island attracts an upmarket clientele. So the super-rich with their yachts relax over ouzo with locals at keyside tavernas, and bathe in the island’s many (pebbly) beaches and coves uncrowded by mainstream tourism. Local prices are accordingly high. There are many small specialty shops that offer attractive souvenirs and clothing. Climb the hill to Kastelli for a panoramic view of the clay-tiled roofs. The best way to see town is to walk, as far as the promontory with its lighthouse, past the shipyards, and the open-air sculpture museum.
