Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea off the coast of Asia Minor. Perhaps best known for being the birthplace of the mathematician Pythagoras, it is of note that it was also home to the philosopher Epicurus and the astronomer Aristarchus who was the first known person to suggest that the earth revolves around the sun. The island itself is rich with pine forests, olive groves, and citrus trees. The greenery of the grape vines rolls down the hills to the coast, giving way to beautiful beaches edged with clear blue water. Samos is a simply delightful place to visit.

Even the capital, Vathy, set around the shores of a bay, resembles an amphitheatre, and is most picturesque. Take the time to absorb the atmosphere of the towns, and be sure to taste the very famous local food. Samos also has a rich cultural and historic heritage. Enjoy visiting: the Efpalineio Tunnel, one of the most significant engineering feats of the ancient world; the temple of Hera, one of the significant monuments of ancient Greece; and the Archaeological Museum in Samos Town that houses many treasures. Lovers of nature will truly delight in visiting the beautiful Potami Waterfalls.

Many visitors visit the two caves located on Mount Kerkis. Pythagoras used the bigger of the two caves as a classroom for his teaching and to provide drinking water, and he inhabited the nearby smaller cave. Access is easy. You will drive for 3 kilometers, and continue on foot for about 250 metres. As you go up, you pass the first chapel of Saint John and you follow the well-signed path. At the entrance of the cave, there is the chapel of Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa. The cave goes back about 80m but you can walk only 15 to 20 meters until you reach the ‘Holy Water.’
